Ferry Man’s Cottage is named after Mr William Bird who operated a ferry across the Totara River during the gold mining years around 1869. This is a great base from which to explore the local gold mining history for which Charleston is world famous.
“My wife and I were looking for a beautiful, private and romantic cottage on the West coast of the South Island of New Zealand. We had some preconceived notions as to what we would like if we could design the stay ourselves. The cottage at Bird’s Ferry hit all of the buttons! Located on a huge, secluded and private segment of land, this amazing cottage was everything we dreamed of. Unbelievably clean ( which is a must for my wife ), extremely well stocked, and cozy. Our only letdown was having to leave! Alison cooked us a superb dinner, which she left for us in the fridge with directions on how to warm it up. Add a bottle of wine, and two people in love, and you have all the ingredients for an ideal stay. We can’t recommend Birds Ferry Lodge enough.” Trip Advisor 2018
