Seal Colony and Cape Foulwind Walkway
New Zealand’s most accessible seal colony is found just out of Westport on the edge of Tauranga Bay. The 10 minute walk from the car park is on a good surface and is suitable for wheelchairs as well as pedestrians! The path leads you to a large viewing platform which overlooks the colony. Best time to view is October-March when the huge bull seals return to mate and the seal pups are at their most playful.
The track continues on all the the way to Cape Foulwind and its light house offering panoramic views of the cape and the rugged coastline including outstanding off shore rock stacks and steeples.
Tauranga Bay is a poular surf spot. With a left handed point and beach break the conditions are best at low tide with a 2m swell.
