The Bay House Tauranga Bay - amazing views from you table

Tauranga Bay is an amazing coastal location and we are lucky enough to have The Bay House there too. So the perfect day -the first day of Spring like weather in 2015 mixed with a super high tide and a lovely lunch followed by a visit to the seals - who could ask for more!

So after an early light lunch of scallops and local black puffing plus snapper and salad we headed down to the shore line. It was high tide and the Tasman Sea was putting on an amazing show as you can see from the pictures. And we managed not to get wet!

15th August 2015 super high tide with a big swell made for some spectacular white water

wild surf

The Bay House Cafe on at the Southerly end of the horseshoe shaped Tauranga Bay. At the North end is the famous seal colony. One of the largest fur seal colonies in New Zealand. Seal numbers vary throughout the year but today due to the wild surf hundreds of seals were sunbathing on the rocks. The viewing platform is high above the colony so the seals are oblivious to your presence and with a zoom lens you can get some amazing pictures. My attempts for today are below.

How many seals can you see???

IMG_4066

An unusual site at the seal colony - this cheeky fearless Weka is trying to steal something it thinks is edible from right under the seal’s nose - the seal chased the Weka away repeatedly

and here is the weka again

how many seals?

Lots of seabirds around Tauranga Bay too - these two were happy to pose for me and my camera!

As you drive to Tauranga Bay watch out for farmed deer in the paddocks alongside the road

This is another weka that we managed to see up close beside the footpath to the seals. We have lots of these at Birds Ferry Lodge

This is the walkway to the seals. It is a well prepared surface making for easy walking and pushchair and wheelchair friendly too

And of course you are going to need somewhere equally spectacular to stay after your visit to The Bay House Tauranga Bay. Look no further then www.birdsferrylodge.co.nz and you can make a booking right here BOOK NOW  See you soon!
